Did not expect a movie about an injured baseball player returning home to turn into a zombie outbreak, but here we are—and I’m not mad about it. Nanticoke blends small-town drama with supernatural horror in a way that’s weird but works.

Shot in the first half of 2010, this is a slasher indie that uses the template of “Friday the 13” meshed with the mounting paranoia of a small group of people in the woods à la “The Blair Witch Project,” minus the found footage angle.

you’re a fan of old-style sci-fi movies then you might get a bit more from this quite enjoyable animated feature. It all happens when a mysterious asteroid lands amidst an urban zoo and from it emerges a critter that likes to absorb any life forms it finds. Oh dear! After “Morbius” (2022), I had hoped that Jared Leto might pick better, but after about ten minutes into this overlong and repetitive adventure I am afraid that proved not to be the case. Named after the Greek war god, he is a sophisticated computer programme that makes the “Terminator” look like “Barbie”. To be fair to Sam Spiegel, he didn’t hold the purse strings too tightly on this sumptuous dramatisation of the lives of Czar Nicholas II (Michael Jayston) and his wife Alexandra (Janet Suzman) and it looks almost as stunning as “Doctor Zhivago” (1965). Sadly, though, that look doesn’t translate into anything very compelling to watch as neither lead actor really has what it takes to enliven either their roles or the tumultuous events at this fascinatingly turbulent time in European history.
