East of Eden Trailer Puts Florence Pugh at the Center of Netflix’s Steinbeck Adaptation
Netflix is bringing one of John Steinbeck’s best-known novels to the screen with a new limited series, and the first trailer offers a glimpse at the troubled world surrounding its central character.
Florence Pugh leads East of Eden as Cathy Ames, a woman whose arrival in the Trask family’s life appears to set off a chain of increasingly complicated events. The trailer introduces Cathy as she meets Adam Trask, played by Christopher Abbott, and eventually becomes his wife.
At first, Adam seems convinced that he can give Cathy the happiness she wants. The footage quickly suggests otherwise. Her increasingly unsettling behavior, including a disturbing moment in which she is seen covered in blood, hints that there is considerably more to her story than meets the eye.
Later scenes show Cathy in a very different setting, dressed elegantly and moving among wealthy guests. Her own words provide perhaps the clearest warning about the character, as she reflects on how evil can sometimes hide behind beauty, kindness, or love.
Adam’s brother Charles, played by Mike Faist, is far less trusting. He warns Adam that Cathy needs to be removed from his life before she causes even more damage. The trailer leaves open one of the adaptation’s central questions: just how much of Cathy’s apparent innocence is genuine?
Who Stars in East of Eden?
Pugh leads the series alongside Christopher Abbott, who plays Adam Trask, and Mike Faist, who portrays Adam’s brother Charles.
The cast also features Hoon Lee as Lee, Tracy Letts as Cyrus Trask, and Martha Plimpton as Faye. Together, the ensemble brings Steinbeck’s family drama into a new television format.
The series is written and co-showrun by Zoe Kazan. The project also has an interesting connection to the earlier screen adaptation of the novel: Kazan’s grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film version starring James Dean.
What Is Netflix’s East of Eden About?
Based on Steinbeck’s novel, the limited series follows the Trask family across multiple generations. Their lives are shaped by ambition, betrayal, family conflict, and the lasting influence of Cathy Ames.
Rather than focusing on a single period of the family’s history, the adaptation explores how choices and conflicts continue to affect the Trasks over time. Cathy remains at the heart of the story, with her actions influencing the people around her in increasingly significant ways.
East of Eden Release Date

The newly released trailer provides the first substantial look at Florence Pugh’s interpretation of Cathy Ames and the dramatic world of the Trask family.
