Spider-Man: Brand New Day Makes Box Office History, Passing ‘The Force Awakens’
Tom Holland’s latest Spider-Man movie has claimed the top spot at the North American box office, surpassing the long-standing domestic record held by ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’.
After 47 days in theaters, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has reached $936.773 million in the U.S. and Canada, moving past the $936 million domestic total earned by Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. The milestone ends the latter film’s more than decade-long run at the top of the all-time North American box office.
The film’s theatrical run has been unusually strong from the beginning. Brand New Day opened with $360 million domestically and $932 million worldwide, before crossing the $1 billion mark just six days after release. It then passed $2 billion after three weekends, reaching the milestone faster than any film except Avengers: Endgame.
Several other box office milestones followed. The movie reached $700 million in 13 days, $800 million in 19 days and $900 million in 36 days, making it only the second film ever to surpass $900 million domestically.
Internationally, the movie has also delivered massive numbers. Its worldwide total has climbed to approximately $2.45 billion, placing it among the highest-grossing films ever.
The movie is the fourth solo Spider-Man outing starring Holland as Peter Parker. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, it follows the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where the world loses its memory of Peter Parker’s identity. Strong audience interest in the aftermath of that story helped drive the film’s enormous opening, while positive word of mouth contributed to its staying power in theaters.
The record also arrives after a difficult period for Marvel at the box office, following commercial disappointments including Captain America: Brave New World and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Marvel and Disney are now preparing to continue the franchise momentum with Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for December.
With Brand New Day now holding the domestic record, attention turns to whether its theatrical run can push the film toward another unprecedented milestone: becoming the first movie to earn $1 billion in North America alone. The current trajectory, however, would likely require a re-release to reach that figure.
