Benjamin Britten's opera *Gloriana* was composed in 1953 for Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation, and is dedicated to her. This new Royal Opera production, timed for the opera's centenary in 2013, features director Richard Jones using a 1953 celebratory pageant as a framework to highlight the opera’s contrasting moments of grandeur and personal connection. The inventive and visually rich staging emphasizes the symbolic link between the Tudor Elizabethan era and the modern New Elizabethan age. William Plomer's libretto cleverly blends modern and historical elements, beautifully complemented by music that artfully combines Tudor musical styles – including lute songs and courtly dances – with Britten’s signature sound.
