Description:
Following his acclaimed opera *Giulio Cesare*, Handel presented *Tamerlano* in 1724, another vibrant historical drama. The story unfolds at the court of Timur the Tartar, fresh from his victory over the Turkish Sultan Bajazet at Angora. Romantic entanglements arise as both Tamerlano and his ally, Greek Prince Andronico, fall for Bajazet's daughter, Asteria. However, Asteria seeks revenge for her father's defeat. This production, directed by Jonathan Miller, was staged in the intimate setting of the Goethe Theatre of Bad Lauchstadt as part of the 2001 Halle Handel Festival.
