Description:
Strauss and Hofmannsthal's "Der Rosenkavalier" is a deeply insightful social comedy set in a fictional Rococo Vienna with strong ties to the decadent fin de siècle. The opera follows the Marschallin's bittersweet farewell to her young lover, Octavian, as he becomes captivated by Sophie, a woman from a middle-class family. While Strauss' music is rich and sensual, it also features moments of tenderness and melancholy. Director Lydia Steier presents the opera using an aesthetic concept by Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein. Diana Damrau stars as the Marschallin, and Joana Mallwitz conducts the Orchestra of the Zurich Opera.
