Shostakovich's opera, "Katherina," initially suggests a tale of a neglected wife committing a terrible crime, similar to Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth. However, inspired by Nikolai Leskov's novel depicting Katherina as a monster, Shostakovich aims to portray an oppressed woman struggling for independence against societal constraints. The opera blends satire, grotesque imagery, and tragedy to evoke both revulsion at Katherina's actions and sympathy for her plight. Violence, eroticism, and the stifling boredom of 19th-century Russian society form the core of this work. This live recording features the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino choir and orchestra, conducted by James Conlon, and stars principal soloists Jeanne-Michèle Charbonnet, Vladimir Vaneev, and Vsevolod Grivnov, performed in the original language.
