This visually compelling production powerfully captures the drama of the opera. The singing, acting, and orchestral performance are all quite good. However, a significant problem persists, one that plagued Puccini for years. Turandot centers on Calaf's relentless pursuit of Turandot's love and marriage, overlooking another woman who genuinely loves him. The challenge lies in convincing the audience to celebrate their union once he achieves his goal. Puccini struggled to find a satisfying resolution. The traditional ending feels inadequate, and Berio’s extended version, while well-intentioned, ultimately highlights the strangeness of the couple.
