Description:
Wozzeck, a soldier, struggles to understand the world around him. He is subjected to cruel medical experiments by his doctor and constant humiliation by his captain. His life is further shattered when his lover, Marie, cheats on him with the drum major. Driven to desperation, Wozzeck commits a murder, killing Marie. Based on a fragment by Georg Büchner, Alban Berg's first opera is a stark portrayal of social injustice and human suffering. However, it’s also a darkly exaggerated work where the unbelievable and the absurd are closely intertwined. Director Andreas Homoki deliberately avoids realism in his adaptation.
