Based on a true story, "Dialogues des Carmelites" depicts the lives of Carmelite nuns as the French Revolution begins. Robert Carsen's production is simply effective, letting the drama unfold naturally. Dagmar Schellenberger powerfully portrays Blanche's transformation from suffering to acceptance. Anja Silja delivers an outstanding performance as the aging Prioress, showing her disturbing descent from calm wisdom to terrified madness as death nears. Riccardo Muti and the La Scala orchestra are magnificent. The final scene, with its multiple executions, is crucial to the production's impact.
