Puccini's final, unfinished opera centers on Turandot, the emperor's ruthless daughter, who challenges her suitors with three riddles. Failure results in execution, a tradition honoring a female ancestor murdered by a prince. The latest challenger is the Prince of Persia, destined for execution at moonrise, observed by Calaf, the Tartarian king's son. Captivated by Turandot's beauty, Calaf accepts the challenge. Starring Rosario La Spina as Calaf, Susan Foster as Turandot, and Hyeseoung Kwon as Liù, the singing is exceptional. With visionary choreography and direction by Graeme Murphy, stunning set and costume design by Kristian Fredrikson, and lighting by John Drummond Montgomery, this production is a visually magnificent experience.
