Description:
Most moviegoers, especially in Europe, would be familiar with the German legend of a scholar making a pact with the Devil. Georges Méliès' early film adaptation likely presented it as a fantastical, isolated episode, without the earlier story (though spoken narration provides some background in this restored version). Faust is initially drawn to Mephistopheles by promises of dancing and beautiful women, but is then frightened by the demons and monsters he encounters. The film's painted sets vividly depict the torments of Hell, sometimes with a provocative element, even as ballerinas appear in the foreground.
