Pig Hill

Deeply unsettling, and very tense Part of this movie looks cheaper than it deserves, but that does not take away from the overall enjoyment very much. The characters are decent, the casting ok, the direction good, and the narrative is twisty and lovely in the best ways. I am glad I gave this a chance, and I walk away creeped out in a good way.…

Things Will Be Different

Timeloops are tough There are many ways to mess up a timelooping movie. This movie stays small and tight, which makes it easier than if the production had been huge. The tension is real, the rules are unclear (at least for the characters) and the characters are good. This is by no means a perfect example of this, by it is more than good enough.…

The Void

Cosmic horror, without Cthulhu This is cosmic horror done right. Yes, it is lower budget, but the premise and story are sound, the characters engaging and well cast. The directing is sometimes a little wonky, but that's ok. It is what it is. This is not Cthulhu, not Lovecraft's cosmic horror. This is Tzeentch cosmic horror. There's a difference, and an important one. I had fun watching this.…

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning
4/10 by Sierbahnn May 10, 2026
It is a dead horse. Let it be Scott does his best and sure, the fights work, but the rest is just no fun anymore. The movie tries to go for more of a bendy clony vibe this time around, and just cannot stick the landing. Dolph and Jean-Claude both look old and tired, and I understand why they made no more of these. It is not a very good movie, unless you are a completionist.…

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
7/10 by Sierbahnn May 10, 2026
Existential dread, and thugs The series turns religious in a way that the last three were not, and I am not sure it is a bad thing. It works well enough, and the casting is spot on (better than the last one, not quite on par with I & II), the directing solid and the visuals grand. It is a worthy entry into the series, and does not skimp.…

Primate

If your ape fails in your apemovie... run If you are hinging your entire premise on that the ape is supposed to be central, and scary, like a Chucky or a M3gan or a Shakma, then you need to make it look really good. And this one does not. Its face is not expressive enough, and you can only hide so much of the clunky motions by making the movie dark. The characters are nice, the story is what it needs to be, but the ape lets all of this down.…

Universal Soldier: Regeneration
4/10 by Sierbahnn May 10, 2026
Cheaper looking, and bad plot intergration This is shot in bland locations (most likely disused ruins in Eastern Europe) and it shows. The A-plot (the main story) is interesting, with a single scary supersoldier and how normal soldiers can handle such a formidable opponent. But that idea gets no room to breathe, for reasons that will become apparent. The B-plot (the sub-plot) about Luke trying recapture his humanity, and could be explored, but of course we don't get to. Instead we get to smash the two plots together and rush to the finale. And of course - Dolph has to be in this for …

The Cellar
3/10 by Sierbahnn May 10, 2026
Dull, poorly made, and slow If you want a movie like this to work you have to make the tension high, and in order for that to be possible you have to have characters to identify and sympathize with. This movie does not, so it cannot build genuine tension. It juxtaposes a few different things happening at once, but fails to build anyone to the point where you care about them. Add to that the LONG stretches of silence (which are not tense, just dull) and the poor production quality and you get a three out of ten, and I might be overly generous there.…

The Gift
6/10 by Sierbahnn May 10, 2026
Tension is there, but it never gets creepy The tone of this movie is a bit strange to me, but it works really well. There are some twists to this that become obvious if you look straight at it, but it is engaging to watch. The casting is inspired, and I can't imagine it done better. The directing is great, and the performances are excellent. It is a tad slow in places, but I enjoyed it a lot.…

The Decedent
6/10 by Sierbahnn May 10, 2026
A bit too heavy on the corn syrup I am happy to see Andrew in more than his goofy videos, and this is not a bad movie, by any stretch. It is not Autopsy of Jane Doe, but the found footage works well, makes sense narratively, and is not disruptive, as it is in so many other such movies. Andrew's part is great, and Zoe is well cast in this too. The story is nonsense, of course, but it is the sort of nonsense that works for a scary movie. I think, for me, the movie falls apart a bit at the end, with gratuitous use of corn-syrup that does not look like blood, and a medical scene w…
