This might be the last of these that is a "movie"
A TV-movie, sure, but still an actual movie. The ones after this are just shlock coasting on the name and the fact that Jean-Claude and Dolph can make money by visiting the set for a few days.
This movie, is in fact a movie. Not a very good one, mind you, but still a movie. It has a plot, nonsense, characters, progression and a ticking clock. It isn't altogether bad, for what it is. Shame that the franchise just sort of went down the tubes after this one. Happy to see Bill here though - great addition.…

Generic and low-budget
I am glad the series actually picked up after this, because this is quite bad. It is competently shot, the acting isn't horrible, but the story and casting really lets this down. It just turns into a bargain-bin production and not worth anyone's time. Recasting Jean-Claude is of course a mistake, for a character that was (and will again) be his.…

Low budget schlock
To try for a sequel and then not include Jean-Claude was of course a mistake, but this was cheaply made, in more ways than one. It makes sense that they get a FAR cheaper actor for a production this cheap.
This is not a good movie - it looks bad, tells a bad story, and is acted and directed poorly. The series picks up briefly at number 4, but this one and number 3 are both stinkers.…

Thoroughly enjoyable
Jason keeps making this movie over and over, and they are getting more and more refined. This is the Beekeper, sort of. A Working Man, sort of. The Mechanic, Transporter, and so on. And he does it well. His costar Bodhi is amazing, and with Bill as the anchor for plot the composition is solid. The action is great, the direction solid, the shots on point. I liked this a lot. It is not high cinema, and noone expects it to be. But it is good.…

Islands are dangerous
This is a fun movie. It has elements from several sorts of stories, is well acted, has stunning visuals, great direction and a fun plot. It is good to see Sam Raimi in such fine form for this. The cast is great, and it is hard to cast a movie with essentially two characters, but these actors have great chemistry, even if the twist emotionally at the end is a bit out of left field.…

A lot more like Rambo than it ought to be
On rewatching this movie, it struck me how much it reminds me of Rambo: First Blood. It's all about how PTSD can mess up your life. The movie itself is, of course, a quintessential 90s action piece. It is furiously fast paced with cheesy dialogue and goofy narrative and plot. The casting is solid and the direction is exactly what it needs to be to make it an action classic.…

Visually stunning but empty
The visual design of this movie is just stunning, but it is as if the entire creative effort went into making this place look creepy, rather than make it actually creepy. The tension is not even cool, let alone chilling, the characters are lack-luster and the story is bland.
I am sure there is more to this movie that might appeal to those who played the games, but as a movie-going experience it is simply not very good.…

A quarter of a century on and this is still a highlight
There was a slew of these movies in the late 90s and early noughts. Some of them have aged poorly but this one still holds up. Yes, it is silly, and yes, it is over the top, but that's sort of the point, and the charm. It is well acted, the effects have aged well, the visual and sound design is on point for what it is, and it is just an all-round good time.…

So much more than found footage
This looed to be just another found footage movie, and didn't have the promise of a "Grave Encounters", for instance. However, the movie switches from the found footage and into a broader horror, and much to its improvement. The casting is solid, the characters are good, the directing works, and while the story is a bit uneven, this is not a bad movie by any stretch.…

Fails to engage
There are slow movies, and there are molasses-like movies, but a movie can still grip you, even if the story is slow. This is not that kind of movie. This is slow, and it fails to grip you. The tension is too thin, and too vague. The casting is good, and the direction is solid, but the movie does not take off.…
