The Exile (1980)

Inspired by an African folktale, the story centers on a kind king who often disguises himself to learn about his people's lives. He encounters two brothers who boldly ask to marry his daughters, knowing they will be executed a year later. Touched by their courage and affection, the king agrees to the marriages. The first brother is killed as foretold, leaving the other heartbroken. His wife urges him to avoid the same fate, leading them on a journey filled with challenges and surprising events. The brothers eventually become the rulers of a distant village, gaining wives and loyal subjects. However, the memory of their promise hangs over them, forcing the protagonist to make a difficult choice: he must sacrifice himself to protect his family.
