Description:

In 1856, the prosperous Indian kingdom of Awadh, ruled by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, becomes the target of the British Empire. General Outram is sent to facilitate its annexation, creating intense pressure on the kingdom. But the Nawab prioritizes pleasure and religious observances over the growing crisis. His court, including nobles Mir and Mirza, remains detached, preoccupied with games while ignoring their responsibilities amidst a volatile political climate. This film adapts Munshi Premchand's short story of the same name, depicting a pivotal moment when traditional kingdoms face the rise of colonial power. The Academy Film Archive and The Film Foundation preserved this work in 2010 to ensure its accessibility for modern audiences.
