Sumbisori (2025)

Hae-jin, a woman in her late twenties, struggles to adapt to city life in Seoul after a childhood spent on the peaceful island of Jeju. Longing for her home, she returns to find welcome from her mother, Ok-ran, and grandmother, Kang-ja. The peace of their reunion is shaken when Kang-ja reveals she is a haenyeo, a free-diving sea woman who has dedicated her life to gathering shellfish from the ocean. Inspired by her grandmother's strength, Hae-jin chooses to follow the same demanding path, causing conflict with her mother. As Hae-jin and Ok-ran grapple with their differing views, they must find common ground when Kang-ja is diagnosed with dementia. The film examines family ties, cultural traditions, and personal development set against the stunning landscapes and customs of Jeju Island, offering a close look at these women's lives and their ability to overcome challenges.
