Description:
This coming-of-age story, the first in Bill Douglas's acclaimed trilogy, follows his childhood in poor Scotland during the early 1940s. As an eight-year-old, living with his half-brother and sick grandmother in a struggling mining town, movies were his only escape. He works hard collecting and returning jam jars to earn money, which he uses to experience the magic of cinema and glimpse a world beyond his difficult life. The film beautifully portrays the innocence, strength, and life-changing impact of movies on a young boy facing hardship.
