Description:

In the midst of the Civil War, orphaned shoeshine boy Spanky finds work on a Mississippi riverboat. He befriends Buckwheat, a young runaway slave. After a misunderstanding with a dangerous gambler, Spanky and Buckwheat are compelled to flee the boat. They find refuge at a house and are then recruited by Marshall Valiant for a crucial task. This experience motivates Spanky to gather the neighborhood children, forming their own small group.
