Description:
Getting into North Korea proved to be VBS's most challenging and unusual undertaking. After a difficult process, they were finally granted permission to visit, but only as tourists. Upon arrival at the airport, North Korean officials took them to a restaurant where women performed nationalist songs. Realizing the group's exhaustion after a long flight, a member from the LA Times warned them that everyone present was likely secret police and that feigned enthusiasm was required for visa approval. To appear enthusiastic, the group got drunk, performed on stage with the singers, and secured their visas. Many others in their delegation were denied.
