Description:
In the 19th century, Britain controlled the global tea trade, exchanging opium grown in its Indian colonies for highly sought-after Chinese tea. This led to China opening its markets, solidifying British commercial power. In 1839, China attempted to ban opium, sparking the Opium War. Britain won, realizing its reliance on Chinese tea was unsustainable. To secure a new supply, the East India Company tasked botanist Robert Fortune with a secret mission: to establish tea plantations in British India. Facing countless dangers in China, Fortune successfully acquired the plants and techniques that would eventually produce Darjeeling tea.
