Unlike civilizations like the Romans and Ancient Egyptians, the Mayan empire didn't develop along a major river. Much of the Mayan region lacks even small rivers or lakes. So why did they settle in Yucatan? The Maya considered the freshwater pools, called 'cenotes,' sacred gateways to the underworld. They are gateways to an incredible underground network of rivers. Only recently explored and understood, this hidden world was formed by unique natural events. Beneath the jungle-covered Mayan temples of Yucatan lies a world more mysterious and incredible than the Maya ever knew. Scientists have discovered a complete food chain in the cenotes' deepest parts – over 20 species never seen in sunlight. Some caverns aren’t completely flooded; thousands of bats live there.
