Description:
Documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker films Otis Redding at the Monterey International Pop Festival in June 1967, as Redding's career was taking off. Comedian Tom Smothers introduces Redding to a crowd that's about to leave, but Redding captivates them with his powerful performance of "Shake." His set also features "Respect" (which he wrote), "I've Been Loving You Too Long," "Satisfaction," and "Try a Little Tenderness." Tragically, Redding died in a plane crash just six months later. Pennebaker, known for his experimental films since the 1950s, received an Oscar nomination in 1993 for *The War Room*, a film about Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign. He has also filmed Norman Mailer, Bob Dylan, and David Bowie.
