Description:
In early Showa-era Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, a newborn baby is abandoned with a doll under the eaves of a merchant's house along the Shikoku pilgrimage route, where a pilgrim struggles to survive. The baby girl, named Haruko, is taken in by Tomita Shizuko and Katsuji as the younger sister to their son Ryosuke, who is three years older. When war begins, 16-year-old Ryosuke enters the naval academy and sails across the Seto Inland Sea. Shizuko finally reveals to Haruko that they are not biological siblings. Haruko, who has secretly harbored feelings for her brother since he promised to protect her, is innocently delighted and journeys to Hiroshima to share this news with him. The following day, an atomic bomb detonates overhead...
