This is the story of Mabel Stark, the world’s first female tiger trainer, who famously said she loved her tigers so much she wanted to die in the ring. Born into poverty in Kentucky, Mabel joined the circus in 1911 and defied expectations by becoming the first woman to train tigers, eventually headlining with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey. Over 57 years, she endured dangerous encounters, navigated multiple marriages, starred in films, and formed deep bonds with up to 20 tigers, preferring affection over force. Her life ended tragically near Jungleland in California. Former circus performers, animal trainers, and historian Janet Davis recount Mabel’s remarkable life and the golden age of the American circus, using Mabel's own words from her memoir, "Hold That Tiger," voiced by Melissa Leo, an Oscar winner.
