The Round-up Project: Kokkinia 1979–Kokkinia 2017 \ M. Z. \ M. K. (2017)

On August 17, 1944, Nazi troops executed seventy-four members of the Greek Resistance at the former British Oriental Carpet factory in Athens' Kokkinia neighborhood (now Nikaia). Hundreds more residents were also killed. Today, a museum and monument mark the site, prompting reflection on this tragic event in Greek history and encouraging dialogue with the past. Inspired by Maria Karavela's 1979 performance at the site and her subsequent censored film, Mary Zygouri collaborates with the local community to create an ongoing project exploring Greece's current economic and social struggles, and those worldwide. Similar to Karavela, Zygouri will present the project’s outcome in a film during Documenta 14.
