Derek Jarman's Will You Dance with Me? offers a vital glimpse into LGBTQ life in 1980s London, resurfacing three decades after its initial filming. In September 1984, Jarman was asked by Ron Peck and Mark Ayres to film improvisations at Benjy’s, a gay club in East London. The footage was intended as early material for their upcoming neo-noir film, Empire State, released in 1987. The diverse crowd of around 100 people present that night – regulars, staff, and potential actors – is captured in detail. Jarman’s footage is rich with the specifics of the time: a New Romantic writing in a booth, the DJ's energetic announcements, and the music he plays, including tracks like "Let the Music Play," "Planet Rock," and "Relax."
