Francis Henshall is out of a job when he becomes the minder to Roscoe Crabbe, a small-time criminal in Brighton on a mission to collect £6,000 from his fiancée's father. But Roscoe is actually Rachel, posing as her deceased brother, who was killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers. While staying at The Cricketers’ Arms, Francis sees an opportunity for extra income and takes a second job with Stanley, who is on the run from the police and waiting to reunite with Rachel. To keep both of his employers from discovering the truth, Francis must keep them apart. It's complicated.
