Description:
In the 1970s, the North American Soccer League tried to bring soccer to American audiences. Most teams struggled, but the New York Cosmos achieved widespread popularity. Created by Steve Ross of Warner Communications and the Ertegun brothers of Atlantic Records, the Cosmos faced a difficult start in 1971. However, in 1975, they signed Pelé, the world's most famous soccer player, for a five-million-dollar contract. Pelé's arrival transformed the Cosmos into a sensation, making the players celebrities. Soon, other international stars like Franz Beckenbauer and Carlos Alberto joined the team. But as the 1980s began, the Cosmos lost fan support and ultimately ceased operations in 1985.
