Description:
Massenet's opera based on Cinderella was written nearly 80 years after Rossini's, and it differs significantly in tone. It lacks Rossini's constant humor and musical wordplay. While popular in its day, this Cendrillon doesn't quite reach the artistic heights of Massenet's best works, such as Manon, Thais, or Werther. Nevertheless, it's a charming opera, beautifully staged by The Royal Opera. Laurent Pelly designed a clever set with movable walls decorated with scenes from Cinderella, opening and closing like the pages of a book.
