Description:
Ankoku Butoh emerged in post-World War II Japan as a radical new dance form. Pioneered by Tatsumi Hijikata, who created and performed throughout the late 1950s and early 1970s, butoh is characterized by highly stylized and deliberate movements. It explores a range of intense emotions – dread, sexuality, violence, serenity, birth, and a primal "creatureness." This recording of *Summer Storm* was captured in 1973 at Kyoto University, Japan, and represents Hijikata’s final public performance before his death in 1986. The video version was produced in 2003.
