Kazuo Ohno: Beauty and Strength (2001)

From the 1960s through the 1970s, Kazuo Ohno created three 16mm films. Numerous recordings of his performances at the "Teatro Fonte" in Yokohama exist on high-quality Beta tape. NHK has also recorded many of his theater performances since his work "The Dead Sea" premiered in 1985. The Kazuo Ohno Dance Studio and NHK collectively possess over one hundred hours of footage, along with a 1994 film by Daniel Schmid and new 16mm footage filmed for this project in October 2000. This 111-minute video/DVD compiles these resources. "Beauty and Strength" features dance performances, film excerpts, interviews, examples of Ohno's drawings and writings, and biographical information to offer a comprehensive view of Kazuo Ohno's dance.
