Stealing Klimt tells the story of 90-year-old Maria Altmann's fight to reclaim five Gustav Klimt paintings stolen from her family by the Nazis in Vienna. These paintings were displayed in the Austrian National Gallery until last year. The film follows Maria's early life in Vienna, her escape from Nazi persecution, and her determined effort to recover the Klimts. Her legal battle eventually reached the US Supreme Court, challenging both Austria and the US government, which opposed her case. After winning in 2006, one painting, "The Golden Portrait" of Maria's aunt Adele Bloch Bauer, was sold to Ronald Lauder for $135 million, becoming the most expensive painting ever sold. The remaining four paintings were recently auctioned at Christie's for record prices.
