Description:
Conflict erupts in the Caucasus. Maria, 75, loses her son in the war. She and her daughter-in-law Sofia have lived in the region for 12 years. Facing famine, they plan to relocate to Russia, deciding on Moscow. Maria takes her dog, while Sofia carries a small suitcase, and they board a train. In the next compartment travels photojournalist Alexander, who is in love with Sofia. At a station near Volgograd, Maria realizes she cannot leave the Caucasus. She writes a letter to Sofia and disembarks with her dog.
