Description:

Jánošík is a figure in Slovak and Polish folklore, appearing in numerous legends, books, and films. The legend tells of a robber who stole from the wealthy and distributed the wealth to the poor. This story spread throughout the region, including Silesia, Moravia, and eventually Bohemia. While the historical robber differed from the modern legend, which echoes common folk tales of heroes helping the disadvantaged, 19th-century activists and writers significantly shaped the story. Jánošík became a central highwayman figure in narratives popular in northern Hungary (now Slovakia) and among the Gorals and Polish visitors of the Podhale region.
