Description:

In 2005, while scouting locations for his film "The Ditch" in former Gobi Desert labor camps – sites where thousands of political prisoners died of starvation – Wang Bing filmed "Traces." He used 35mm black and white film, a gift from artist Yang Fudong, to document this landscape facing inevitable destruction. The film is silent, recording the faint remnants of human existence: bones, clothing, footprints. Drawing on experimental documentary techniques, it reflects themes central to Wang Bing’s work, including the story of the 1950s campaign against "rightist elements" and the re-education and hard labor camps established before the Cultural Revolution. First completed in 2014, the film premiered that same year at the Centre Pompidou and was later shown at the Galerie Chantal Crousel in 2018.
