Description:
After her mother's death, Winnie Brady, who uses a wheelchair, is taken in by her neighbor, shopkeeper "Uncle" Joe Carmine. Joe persuades Father Ryan to allow him to informally adopt her. They live together with Tommy Devlin, his grandmother Mrs. Devlin, and a dog Winnie names Muriel. To fund an operation for Winnie's legs, Joe sells his shop, but the surgery is unsuccessful, bankrupting him. He then struggles to make a living selling produce on the streets. Winnie is sent to an orphanage, and Joe is discouraged from seeing her. Overcome with grief, Joe slowly becomes ill. Father Ryan brings Winnie to him, and she finds the strength to stand, walk, and sing his favorite song, "Santa Maria," at his bedside. Later, after regaining full use of her legs, Joe takes Winnie and the children on a picnic in the countryside in his new catering truck.
