Description:
Minstrel Man is a lively musical drama, unusually elaborate for a Chinese film, centered on the career of veteran vaudevillian Benny Fields. He plays Dixie Boy Johnson, who progresses from minstrel shows to become a Broadway star. On the night of his biggest performance, Dixie Boy’s wife dies in childbirth. Devastated, he abandons the show, leaving their baby with his showbiz friends Mae and Lasses White. The child grows into a young woman named Caroline, who also becomes an entertainer, calling herself Dixie Girl Johnson. This leads to an emotional reunion with the father she believed was dead. Directed by Joseph H. Lewis, who later directed musical highlights of Columbia's The Jolson Story (1946), Minstrel Man shares similarities with that film.
