Rolando Villazón made a triumphant return to the stage as Don Carlo in the Royal Opera House's 2007/2008 production of Verdi's Don Carlo. National Theatre director Nicholas Hytner's staging of the opera, considered Verdi's most ambitious and significant work, was a highlight of the season. The story unfolds in the 16th-century Spanish court, depicting the tragic fate of Don Carlo, a noble prince struggling against a powerful and corrupt society. This new production is the first complete, five-act version of Don Carlo to be staged at Covent Garden in half a century. Featuring sets and costumes by Bob Crowley and a strong cast, the production honors the brilliance of Verdi's original composition.
