Description:
In a remote part of Nicaragua, ten or twelve-year-old Alsino lives with his grandmother amidst a civil war. When a US advisor orders the army to establish a staging area near his village, Alsino attempts to maintain a normal childhood, playing with a girl and exploring his grandfather's belongings. He ventures to town to sell a saddle, experiences alcohol for the first time, and is taken to a brothel. However, the war constantly looms. A helicopter flight with the US advisor fails to impress him. Witnessing the soldiers’ brutality awakens Alsino's sympathies towards the rebels. Following a disastrous army attack, the boy becomes fully immersed in the conflict.
