In November 1958, Warren Harding achieved the first free ascent of El Capitan's Nose route, a feat considered a monumental undertaking. Nearly a year and a half after his initial climb, Harding spent 47 days on the wall, spread over 17 months, placing 675 pitons to reach the summit. He undertook the project primarily on weekends with climbing partners he considered less skilled than himself. This accomplishment solidified Harding's legendary status, though it drew criticism from climbers like Royal Robbins, who favored a more stylistic approach.
