Boris Godunov (2025)

In 17th-century Russia, Boris Godunov rises to power, first as regent and then as tsar. However, past events haunt him, leading to the loss of his power and ultimately his sanity. As Russia descends into corruption, intrigue, and political upheaval, Modest Mussorgsky's opera explores the destructive consequences of unchecked ambition – a theme strikingly relevant today. Director Kirill Serebrennikov draws on his own experiences in Russia to depict this story of political turmoil and its impact on ordinary people. The production highlights the human cost of high-stakes power struggles. Conductor Vasily Petrenko makes his Amsterdam debut leading the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, joined by a distinguished cast headed by bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny in his first portrayal of the title role.
