The Future is Behind You (2004)

This film is based on an anonymous family archive from 1930s Europe, focusing on two sisters who share a close bond, playing, competing, and growing up together as the looming threat of war approaches. The story unfolds through three layers: posed home movies depicting a seemingly perfect family, historical events subtly influencing the images, and the sisters' evolving identities – the older sister's carefree spirit gradually replaced by societal expectations, and the younger sister's spirited nature transforming into awkwardness. Part biography, part fiction, and exploring history and psychology, the film seeks to connect personal stories with broader historical narratives. Music by John Zorn, arranged and performed by Sylvie Courvoisier and Mark Feldman.
