Description:
Rafah, in southern Gaza, is a city divided by the Philadelphia Road, a corridor connecting Sinai and Gaza. Its fate shifted on September 12, 2005, when Israel withdrew from Gaza, abandoning the Philadelphia Road and nearby settlements. Instead of recovery, Rafah became a center for arms smuggling between Egypt and Gaza, fueling violent family conflicts following Hamas's victory in the legislative elections. The city plunged into economic crisis. On June 25, 2006, Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit was captured by Palestinian militants via a tunnel from Rafah. In response, Israeli forces shelled homes of arms dealers along the Philadelphia Road. By September 12, 2006, a year after the withdrawal, any hope for renewal had vanished.
