On Christmas Eve, Tom Andrews, his wife Kathy, their two children, and Tom's father Henry travel to Silversprings for a family visit. They make an unplanned stop at the ghost town of Sutterville, a place Tom has inexplicably dreamed about every Christmas of his life. Despite his father's warnings, their car mysteriously drives them there and then breaks down, trapping them. They encounter Clarence McCoughlin, a vagrant who is revealed to be a man who supposedly died in Sutterville forty years ago, and who displays unsettlingly powerful abilities. As the Andrews family explores the town, an atmosphere of dread descends, and Clarence escapes, heading back to Sutterville for a disturbing reunion.
