Description:
This film draws from a widely known folk legend. It tells the story of Qianlong, the Manchu emperor of China in the 18th century, who was secretly the son of a Han Chinese subject. His half-brother, Chen Jialuo, is the leader of the Red Flower Society, a secret organization fighting against Manchu rule. A scholar by trade, Chen believes he can persuade his brother to abandon the Manchus and restore Han Chinese power. However, the story concludes with the brutal suppression of the society. It’s a reflection on a troubling aspect of Chinese history, illustrating how ethics and humanity are often overwhelmed by power.
