Description:
In 1996, Marc Dutroux was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, torturing, and sexually abusing six girls aged 8 to 19, four of whom died. His highly publicized trial occurred in 2004. Dutroux was found guilty on all counts, including the murder of a suspected associate, and sentenced to life imprisonment. Dutroux's accomplices included Michelle Martin, Michel Lelièvre, Jean-Michel Nihoul, and Bernard Weinstein. Martin was convicted as an accomplice and sentenced to 30 years. Lelièvre received a 25-year sentence. Nihoul, a known figure in Brussels' nightlife, was acquitted of the kidnapping charges but convicted of involvement in a human and drug trafficking gang, receiving a five-year prison term. Weinstein was not tried; he was killed by Dutroux.
