Description:
In the town of Hope, a community on the fringes of the British Empire, several desperate situations intertwine. Dorothea Brook wants to rescue her pregnant sister Rose from Fraser, a wealthy man with ulterior motives. Local politician William Poyner needs money and believes marrying Dorothea is his solution. Dorothea hires Lawrence Hayes, a skilled but rugged man, to use jewels to bribe Fraser and marry Rose. Hayes secretly loves Dorothea and would accept marrying Rose to remain near her. However, Dorothea is involved with the captivating Anne Cooper, who encourages Dorothea to marry Poyner as a way to conceal their affair. Will these desperate attempts to find happiness truly bring anyone fulfillment?
