Description:
In September 1959, six Europeans embark on a seven-month trek across the uncharted interior of New Guinea, traveling from Cook's Bay to the far side of the island. The 450-mile journey involved encounters with coastal villagers who welcomed them into their rituals and communities, while those in the interior kept a distance, requiring reliance on airlifts for sustenance. Facing extreme conditions – including altitudes above 10,000 feet, construction of 14 bridges, and battling leeches and malaria – the expedition's narrator focuses on depicting the indigenous people as primitive, headhunters, and cannibals.
