Description:

Narrated by Katharine Cornell and presented in black and white, the film begins by introducing the story of Helen Keller, a deaf and blind advocate for disabled rights, through newsreels, interviews, and historical photographs over the first 24 minutes. Footage shows her international travels and meetings with world leaders, including a moment where President Eisenhower allows her to touch his face. The remainder of the film offers a glimpse into Keller's daily life around 1955. Made just thirteen years before her death, the film focuses on Keller's relationship with Polly Thomson, her live-in companion and replacement for Anne Sullivan. From her morning walk along a handrail to her work and evening Bible reading, Keller’s peaceful acceptance of her life is both remarkable and uplifting. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2006.
